How to Find the Perfect Ohio Valley Location for Your Photo Session

Things to Think About When Choosing Your Location

When it comes to choosing a photo shoot location, the Ohio Valley has so many beautiful options from which to choose. So many, actually, that it might seem like a difficult task! However, it doesn't have to be. A location usually drives some of the other decisions you will need to make about your shoot, so it's important to choose the right place! Here are a few questions to ask yourself before you decide on a location:
1.
What kind of theme/vibe/look do I want? If a particular building or natural backdrop would work well for your theme, look around your area for spots that meet your requirements. If you don't know what kind of backdrop you want (and it's totally okay if you don't!), take an afternoon and drive around the area for inspiration. It's really easy to overlook beautiful spots on your daily commute or to not know about hidden gems that are right in our backyard. Also never be shy to ask family and friends about spots on their property. We have a list available of private and public properties that make great photo backdrops and are happy to help scout locations with you.
The beautiful open spot used above is often overlooked for photos, but sits right next to one of the most popular photo spots in St. Clairsville, The National Road Bike Trail Gazebo.
2. Are you allowed to take pictures there?
Make sure that you can legally take pictures at the location that you have in mind. If it's not public property or available to the public you will need to get permission first. We are happy to take on the task of obtaining permission for your photo session but do suggest giving us at least a week prior to your session to iron out all the details!
3. Is it accessible?
Consider that not all outdoor locations may be available all year round or you might not be able to get to them at all. Your safety is also an important aspect to think about before you decide on a location. Taking pictures on a mountain ledge may look neat, but it’s best not to put yourself in harm’s way. The waterfall at Oglebay Park is a great example of this. An absolutely stunning location both at the top and bottom of the small falls and there's even a hidden smaller falls to one side. However, the location has limited parking that is very close to the road and to access the lower falls you must walk down a small hill and through water. Think of everyone participating in your photos and can they easily access the location before finalizing it.
4. How do you get to your location? Depending on your location, bringing as few vehicles as possible is a good rule of thumb. Always play it safe and assume where you're going has limited parking. Choose the parking spot at your location that gives you the shortest and easiest walk to the session location. If you choose a longer session or a session with outfit changes, are you able to change your clothing and touch up your hair and makeup during the shoot? We have a changing tent and mirrors available to travel with and are happy to bring them for your session if we discuss them ahead of time. You should also find out ahead of time if and where a restroom is available in case you need it.
5. Will the photo session be in a public place?
If the location you have chosen has a lot of foot traffic, you need to ask yourself whether you are comfortable being photographed in front of others. If not, you might want to rethink your choice in location. This is very important to consider if you're planning a surprise proposal or baby announcement during the shoot. Foot traffic always means onlookers who will always make themselves a part of important moments whether you want them to or not.
The amount of foot traffic in your chosen spot should also dictate day of the week and time of your session. Public parks may be bustling on the weekends but very quiet during the week. Selecting your location ahead of time allows us to research what may be going on at your location and if we need to, make some adjustments.
Your location tells part of your photo's story, so it’s worthwhile to choose a meaningful spot. We look forward to helping you find the perfect location for your portraits and creating memories to last a lifetime!
